MENA COMMUNITY CHRONICLE

The Jews of Casablanca

The largest Jewish city in modern Morocco — synagogues, Alliance schools, and Masoretic Text literacy.

I. From Port to Metropolis

Casablanca rose to Morocco's economic capital, and its Jewish population grew with it. Hebrew remained the language of Torah.

II. Alliance Schools and Masoretic Literacy

The Alliance Israélite Universelle established major schools teaching French, modern Hebrew, and biblical studies with Tiberian vocalization.

III. Protectorate, Independence, and Diminishment

A few thousand Jews remain in Morocco today, many in Casablanca — the last substantial Jewish community in the Arab world.
