The Jews of Basra

Jews at the head of the Persian GulfBasra's merchants and links to Babylonian Torah study.

I. Port City and Ancient Settlement

Basra attracted Jewish merchants linking Mesopotamia to the Indian Ocean trade. The community belonged to the Babylonian rabbinic orbit.

II. Judeo-Arabic and Sacred Learning

Basra's Jews spoke Judeo-Arabic and prayed in Hebrew. Letters from the Genizah world show merchants writing with biblical oaths.

III. Modern Decline and Departure

Most Basran Jews emigrated to Israel in the 1950s. Today no Jewish community remains in Basra.
